Family and caste
Anandpal Singh belonged to a Ravana Rajput family. He was the son of Hukam Singh Chouhan and Nirmal Kanwar. He had a younger brother, Viki. He also had a sister.
In 1992, Anandpal Singh married Raj Kanwar. Together they had a son, Charanjit Kanwar Chouhan, and two daughters, Chinu and Yogita Singh.
Anandpal was in a relationship with Anuradha Chaudhary, a software engineer.
Killed his own friend
The story began in 1992 when Anandpal, who belonged to a Ravana Rajput family, was about to get married. In most areas of Rajasthan, people believe that children born after marriage between Rajput men and non-Rajput women do not belong to the Rajput community but are kept in a separate category called ‘Ravana Rajput Community’. As Anandpal did not belong to a purely Rajput family, the pure Rajputs of the village warned his family that if the groom follows the tradition of ‘Ghodi Chadna’, the results will not be good for his family; as only a pure Rajput could climb the mare at that time. During that period, Anandpal became closely associated with Jeevanram Godara, the student president of Bangur College, Didwana. He shared the incident with Godara, who remained present at Anandpal’s wedding and made him carry the mare in his presence. Their friendship multiplied after this incident. However, on June 27, 2006, Anandpal recklessly killed Jeevanram Godara. He reportedly killed Jeevanram to take revenge for the murder of Madan Singh (Indian Army personnel), who was a Rajput. He was later arrested by a Rajasthan court for killing Jeevanram Godara.
An ordinary man turned gangster
Anandpal developed an interest in politics during 1999 when he participated in and won the Panchayat Samiti elections in the village of Sanvrad. He later contested the elections for the Pradhan of Ladnu Panchayat Samiti and was defeated by Jagnath Burdak (the son of Harji Ram Burdak) by a margin of only 2 votes. Harji Ram was a cabinet minister in the Ashok Gehlot ministry in 2008. In 2000, elections were held for the Ladnu Panchayat Samiti committees. At that time, a police case was brought against Anandpal for disrupting the government’s work; as it did not allow a contestant to submit their nomination papers. This was the first police case against Singh. By 2006, Anandpal had entered the world of crime and began to make enemies of his competitors. He became involved in the illegal liquor trade.
Escaped from police custody
In 2012, Anandpal was jailed for conducting some illegal operations. On September 3, 2015, he escaped from police custody while being taken to Ajmer High Security Prison after a court hearing. Three masked persons reportedly fired at the van in Khokhar village and Singh escaped from police custody along with two other criminals. This incident lists him as one of the most wanted criminals in Rajasthan. Rajasthan police spent millions of rupees to catch the gangster.
After escaping from police custody, Singh apparently killed a policeman when he tried to stop his vehicle in Gudha Bhagwandas.
Illegal property and wealth
Rajasthan police stated that Anandpal and his brothers gained immense wealth after entering the world of crime; however, the family was never able to name the source of income. Apparently one of Singh’s daughters spent almost Rs. 20 lakh in his engineering studies in Dubai. His other daughter and son were also reported to be studying at an expensive school in Pune. His family owned two flats in the posh Jaipur colonies that were worth more than Rs. 60 lakh each. Later, the police confiscated around 370 bighas from his land that he owned in Kuchaman, Jaipur, Hanumangarh, Sikar and Churu. The family also owned a mining unit in Makarana and several ‘benami’ properties in different cities in Rajasthan.
Robin-Hood of the Rajput community
Anandpal had several criminal charges against him, including murder, robbery, extortion, and gang warfare. Despite having these charges on his head, most people in Rajasthan considered him the Robin-Hood of the Rajputs. He was known for his acts of wealth redistribution. He often benefited the poor by robbing the rich. Anandpal reportedly had a group of loyal partners in his crime who were often willing to sacrifice their own lives for Anandpal. In July 2014, during a gang war in Bikaner jail, his close aide, Balveer Banuda, saved his life by covering for him when a shooter (sent by Anandpal’s rival to kill him).
An attempt to surrender
In May 2017, Anandpal’s lawyer met with then-Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh to discuss that Anandpal Singh was a patriot and that he was willing to surrender if given security. His lawyer also wrote to Judge Cheif of the Rajasthan High Court, stating that a fair investigation should be carried out; since Anandpal had not committed any crime. He said that the injustice of the leaders had led him to this situation. He added that he had escaped from jail because his friend, Banuda, was killed inside jail by his enemy, and had he not escaped from jail, he could have been killed as well.
According to government officials in Rajasthan, Anandpal was shot dead on June 24, 2017 (at midnight) in a raid by the Rajasthan Police Anti-Terrorism Special Operations Group (ATS) in Malasar, Churu district. However, his family and many others denied the official government statement and blamed the police for his death. His family and lawyers even said that Anandpal wanted to surrender, but the government wanted him dead.
After Anandpal’s death, his family sought a CBI investigation and also demanded access to his wealth. They refused to accept her body until her demands were met. His lawyer even alleged that Anandpal was aware of several dirty secrets from a minister in the then Rajasthan BJP government, and believed this could be one of the reasons behind Anandpal’s encounter.
Then-Rajasthan Interior Minister Gulab Chand Kataria denied calling for a CBI investigation into the Anandpal encounter, saying:
How can I order a CBI probe against my own strength? I am the chief of the police force. It is morally wrong for me to request a CBI investigation against my own men, they can go to court if they want an investigation. We are ready to face any investigation, but we cannot order it on our own, I was assigned a duty and the police worked on it. If the Superior Court or the Supreme Court orders an investigation, we will deal with it. “
On June 30, 2017, an autopsy was carried out again by order of the court. His family accepted the body on July 1, 2017. However, his body was not cremated until 20 days after his death.
Protests and Cremation
The government’s denial of the CBI investigation led to several anti-government protests by his family and the Rajput community.
Protests after his death on June 25, 2017
Anandpal had a picture of Robin Hood in Rajasthan, and his death caused great unrest across the state. Since his death on June 25, 2017, many Rajputs protested the encounter. People were upset with the government; as the government had denied his family’s request for a CBI investigation. People criticized the government and expressed their anger through social media platforms, as a result, the government suspended internet services in Sikar, Churu and Nagaur for a week to suppress the protest.
A condolences meeting hosted by the Rajput community
On July 12, 2017, Ravana Rajputs and Rajput society formed a Joint Struggle Committee, which convened a tribute meeting on July 12, 2017. More than 2 lakh people gathered at the meeting. During the meeting, the Rajputs pledged not to vote for the BJP in the 2018 assembly elections. While the government took various steps to ensure the peaceful development of the condolence ceremony, violence erupted during the meeting. A Nagaur SP gunman fired to disperse the crowd, further angering the crowd, and the crowd began throwing stones at the police; injuring 19 people, including Nagaur SP.
On July 13, 2017, the director general of the Rajasthan jail and a Rajput officer, Ajit Singh, tried to persuade Anandpal’s family to accept cremation. A notice from the Human Rights Commission was posted at Singh’s home, stating that the cremation would occur within 24 hours. The police and the government arranged for the funeral and asked Singh’s son to walk with them. However, his son refused to go. Later, the police brought Singh’s brother and five people from the village to the funeral and carried out the procedure. However, Anandpal’s mother was adamant that if the CBI did not investigate her son’s encounter and his body was forcibly cremated, she would be burned with her son. As soon as the police took Anandpal’s body away for the funeral, his mother, Nirmal Kanwar, tried to burn herself by spraying kerosene.
